Training
Everything to complete before bench work starts. This covers more than safety — animal training and the CITI courses are here too, so there is one list rather than three.
Two parts. Everyone does Part 1. Do Part 2 as well if you will work with animals.
Courses are on Worksafe unless it says CITI. Search the course ID exactly as written.
Part 1 — Everyone
This lab works with human cell lines and specimens, so the biohazard courses apply to everyone, not just to people at the bench.

Paperwork
- Site Safety Orientation Checklist — a form, not a course · once
- Added to the BUA in SafetyNet — the PI does this
- Hepatitis B vaccination — accept it or sign the declination
Part 2 — Animal work only
Skip this part if you will not handle animals or animal tissue.
Do these in order.
- Medical History Questionnaire — mhq.healthsciences.ucla.edu · annual
- CITI — Animal Research (General Certification Test) · every 3 years
- CITI — Working with Mice in a Research Setting
- Identifying and Reporting Sick and Injured Rodents —
DLAM-IRSIR-OL - Rodent Euthanasia —
DLAM-RE-PILS-OL - DLAM Cage Side Communication Cards —
DLAM-CSCC - Species-specific training — Mouse — done in the lab, with the PI. Hands-on, after the online courses above are complete.
- Waste Anesthetic Gas —
ENV-WAG-OL· annual

How to use CITI
CITI is a separate website from Worksafe. Getting the login wrong is the most common mistake — certificates end up on an account nobody can see, and the courses have to be redone.
Logging in
- Go to citiprogram.org
- Click “LOG IN THROUGH MY ORGANIZATION” — do not register a new account with a personal email
- Choose University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
- Sign in with your UCLA Logon ID
This links your certificates to your ARC personnel record automatically. Registering any other way means they will not count.
Choosing your courses
The first time in, CITI shows a page called Select Curriculum. Section One asks which categories apply to you — check the ones that describe your work:
| Box | |
|---|---|
| I conduct human subjects research (OHRPP) | Only if you are on an IRB protocol |
| I conduct animal research | Yes, if Part 2 applies to you |
| Hazardous biological material or recombinant / synthetic nucleic acids (IBC) | Yes — everyone in this lab |
Then answer the follow-up questions for each box you ticked. Under animal research, choose Animal Research (ARC General Certification Test) and Working with Mice in Research Settings.
Download your completion certificates when you finish.
With the PI
Before any bench work, and once a year after: read the safety manual, read the SOPs for your work and sign each one, walk the lab, and sign the training record. No online module covers this part.
Course IDs from the UCLA EH&S Research Safety Training Guide, rev. 05/11/22. The matrix is the authority — check it when a role or a hazard changes. Reviewed 18 September 2026.
