Lab-written chemical SOPs

Four hazards in this lab have no UCLA band. These SOPs are written by the lab and cover the gap. Each one names the UCLA banded SOP it supplements — read both.

SOP Covers Read with
Chemical Sensitizers H334 respiratory and H317 skin sensitizers — glutaraldehyde, ammonium persulfate, G 418, DNase, transfer buffer, FITC-dextran Oxidizers · Corrosives · Carcinogens
Sodium Azide Solid azide and every azide-preserved antibody stock. Metal azides, drain ban Acute Toxicants
Guanidinium Salt Lysis Reagents QIAzol, TRIzol, RLT, AL/AW1. Bleach contact releases cyanide gas Phenol · Acutely Toxic Corrosives
Potent Bioactive Research Compounds Bafilomycin, Y-27632, DAPT, CCCP. DMSO stocks as systemic exposure Novel Chemicals with Unknown Hazards

These are laboratory-written, not EH&S templates, and are pending EH&S review before filing in the Chemical Hygiene Plan.

UCLA banded chemical SOPs

Assigned from this lab’s chemical inventory. Sixteen are required by chemicals actually held; three are included because the hazard exists but is not tracked in the chemical inventory.

Required

SOP Driven by
Flammables 17 chemicals
Carcinogens and Reproductive Toxicants 10 chemicals
Corrosives 9 chemicals
Acute Toxicants 6 chemicals
Formaldehyde 5 chemicals
Corrosive Flammables 2 chemicals
Oxidizing Corrosives 2 chemicals
Acutely Toxic Corrosives QIAzol · formaldehyde 37%
Peroxide Forming Chemicals 2 chemicals
Novel Chemicals with Unknown Hazards 2 chemicals
Oxidizers 1 chemical
Phenol QIAzol
Dichloromethane 1 chemical. Its direct Box link requires a login — this goes to the EH&S index instead
Halogenated Solvents 1 chemical
Acutely Toxic Chlorinated Solvents Chloroform
Acutely Toxic Carcinogens and Reproductive Toxicants Azoxymethane

Chemical-specific SOPs override the generic band. Where Formaldehyde, Phenol or Dichloromethane applies, it is the one to follow.

Also in force

Hazards present in the lab that the chemical inventory does not track.

SOP Why
Liquid Nitrogen and other Cryogens LN2 in MRL 1529
Compressed Gases CO₂ cylinders
Anesthetics Isoflurane

Biosafety — what applies here

The lab works with adeno-associated viral vectors, third-generation HIV-based lentiviral vectors, unfixed human intestinal, brain and blood-derived specimens, human and mouse cell lines and organoid cultures, and transgenic mice.

General practice — incident response · biohazardous spill response · donning and doffing PPE · hand sanitation · transport of biohazardous materials. Decontamination is the one exception: the lab follows its own modified copy of the EH&S SOP, which sets the minimum contact time for 10% bleach at 10 minutes. Ask the PI for it rather than using the EH&S version.

Equipment and technique — biosafety cabinet use · sharps use · centrifugation · aerosol-generating equipment · aspiration flask · ELISA · imaging live cells · handling human materials outside a biosafety cabinet

Animal work — AAV in rodents · biohazardous animal injections · handling and restraint · necropsy · cage changing and washing · transport · ABSL-2 containment · laboratory animal allergies

Waste — solid medical waste · liquid medical waste · sharps medical waste · recombinant nucleic acid waste · pathology waste · biohazardous animal disposal

All of these are at ehs.ucla.edu/documents/biosafety.

Lab-written biosafety SOPs

The lab’s own vector, human-specimen, incident-response and transport SOPs carry room-level detail and personal contact numbers, so they are not published here. Lab members: they are linked from the Slack canvas in #lab-safety, and the signed copies are in the safety manual.

They cover lentiviral vectors, AAV in rodents, human tissue and blood-derived samples, biohazardous incident response, and transport of biohazardous materials — plus the lab’s modified Decontamination SOP, the completed Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan, and the lentivirus Post-Exposure Plan, which is the only Post-Exposure Plan this lab holds. Lab members: the current versions are the ones in the lab’s Google Drive SOP folder.
